NFPA 101
Life Safety Code
NFPA 101 is the most widely adopted life safety standard in the US, establishing minimum requirements for egress, emergency lighting, exit signage, and occupant notification systems. It applies to virtually every commercial, industrial, and institutional building.
Means of Egress Requirements
→ Two accessible exits required for most occupancies over 49 persons
→ Exit access corridors: minimum 28 inches clear width (44 inches for high-occupancy)
→ Exit doors must swing in the direction of egress travel when serving 50+ persons
→ Travel distance to exit: 200 ft (unsprinklered) / 250 ft (sprinklered) for most occupancies
→ Dead-end corridors limited to 20 feet (50 feet in sprinklered buildings)
→ Exit discharge must lead directly to a public way
Emergency Lighting & Exit Signage
| Component | Standard | Test Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency Lighting | 1.5-hr battery backup, 1 fc at floor level | 30-sec monthly, 90-min annually |
| Exit Signs (illuminated) | Visible from 100 ft, red or green lettering | 30-sec monthly, 90-min annually |
| Exit Signs (photoluminescent) | Listed for the specific application | Visual inspection annually |
| Emergency Generator | 10-sec startup, powers egress lighting | Monthly loaded test, annual 2-hr test |
